I work as an Associate Professor (Accredited as Full Professor in February, 2011) at the Department of English at the University of Valladolid (Spain), where I held the post of Vice-Rector (Vicerrector de Economía) since 2003 to 2006. I have also taught at the Department of Business Communication, University of Aarhus (Denmark) as Guest Professor (2007-2008 and 2011-2012). I had previously stayed at the Universities of Dundee (United Kingdom) and Ottawa (Canada) for research purposes.
My current research interest lies in Lexicography, particularly specialized lexicography. I am also interested in Translation and in English for Specific Purposes (ESP). As lexicographer, I defend a functional approach to dictionary making and criticism, especially the ideas defended by the function theory of lexicography.
In 2007 I was invited to teach and do research at the Department of Language and Business Communication, Aarhus School of Business, University of Aarhus (Denmark) (September to December, 2007); I have also lectured as plenary/keynote speaker at various Conferences held in Spain, Denmark, United States, and China.
In March 2012, I was appointed Velux Visiting Professor at the Department of Business Communication and spent three months (March to end of May) at the University of Aarhus.
During the academic year 2011-2012 I have also been invited to carry out academic activities at the University of Hildesheim (Germany) and have also been invited to present a one-day workshop on LSP Lexicography at AFRILEX's 17th Annual International Conference on Lexicography, University of Pretoria, South Africa.
From 2003 to 2006, I was the review editor of Ibérica, a peer-reviewed journal of the European Association of Languages for Specific Purposes. I am currently member of the Editorial Board of different peer-reviewed journals: Hermes. Journal of Language and Communication Studies; Annual Review of Cognitive Linguistics; Revista Española de Lingüística Aplicada (RESLA); African Journal of History and Culture; Odisea: Revista de Estudios Ingleses; The Open Applied Linguistics Journal; Circulo de Lingüística Aplicada a la Comunicación. and I have also acted as referee for the above mentioned journals and for Journal of Pragmatics, Applied Linguistics, English for Specific Purposes, International Journal of Lexicography, Lexikos, and Miscelánea.
